How to Prepare For a Helicopter Tour?
You want to have the best possible time within the tour’s timeframe. We understand that. Here are 5 tips to help you best prepare for a helicopter tour.
- Clothing: The first step is paying attention to how you dress for your helicopter tour. Wear long pants with a light jacket or windcheater. People with longer hair might want to keep them pulled back. Loose accessories such as hats, sunglasses, necklaces, or loose jewelry are not recommended. The same applies to footwear: flip-flops and sandals are not recommended. Closed-toe shoes work best. Also, avoid open-bottomed clothing such as dresses and skirts.
- Protecting your equipment: Lanyards, phone cases, and other safety measures are important to protect your equipment such as cameras and phones. Make sure that all personal belongings and equipment are secured. Anything that’s loosely packed or worse, just held in hands, runs the risk of getting damaged. Harnesses are important when it comes to carrying professional photography equipment. Getting your camera body or lens tossed out of the helicopter is a harrowing nightmare.
- Motion sickness: Thankfully, front-facing seats don’t create much of a problem for people with motion sickness. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you have felt motion sickness in the past and especially if this is your first helicopter ride, then you might want to stock up on some non-drowsy motion sickness medication. We don’t have rear-facing seats that worsen motion sickness, so you should be in the clear if you are not oversensitive to motion.
- Safety and fun: Your fun does not come before the helicopter’s safety. Even if you are on a solo ride or a ride with a partner, it does not give you control over the helicopter. Always be careful and listen to the pilot. Your safety is in your hands when on a helicopter, largely unassisted. If you are unsure about anything, you can ask the staff or the pilot beforehand.
- Cold: It can get cold during the flight. Be prepared for this. Bringing a jacket or a sweater doesn’t hurt. In the winter season, always dress in a thick jacket with gloves and a scarf. Keeping yourself comfortably warm is the first step to enjoying your ride fully. However, avoid anything that can drop or come off during the ride.
We do everything in our capacity to make the ride fun. We will make sure you know everything that there is to know to make your helicopter ride more enjoyable and comfortable.
How to Make Amazing Photos From a Helicopter?
Successfully capturing your trip and its highlights on your camera can be a tough task. It’s likely that you will get blurry pictures or miss something important if you are uninitiated on aerial photography. Here are 5 tips to help you along capturing moments the best way when on a helicopter.
- Dark clothing
Avoid light-colored clothing because the glass panes of helicopters will reflect your image. Darker clothing will help you avoid glare and reflections, which in turn makes it easier to snap photographs of everything on the other side of the glass pane.
- Lens options
Wide lenses trump large zoom range lenses in helicopters. Your helicopter tour will have brief pauses, hovering, and more maneuverability (in contrast to a plane). What this means is that you will be much closer to your subject than when on a plane. So, if you are packing your DSLR for the tour, make sure to only pack something like a 16-35mm f/2.8 lens. Mid-range zoom lenses also work well. Image stabilization is a must for taking pictures from helicopters. Also, try to cut down on the gear you carry.
It’s likely that you don’t have experience in handling multiple lenses, camera bodies, or other photography gear and switching between them while in-flight. It’s best to keep it simple. The less the gear, the better it is.
- Speed and depth
Your camera settings should be adjusted apart from the camera being clean. If you are carrying a backup camera then this applies to that one as well. Adjust your camera settings for speed and depth.
Time while doing aerial photography from a helicopter will literally fly. And it will fly fast. Even if you lose one minute to camera settings, it can easily be the difference between a great shot and a mediocre one. Always make sure that your settings are pre-adjusted for what you will be shooting. For example, keep your shutter speed eight times your focal length (such as 1/1600 sec for 200mm). The aperture is important because you need to determine the depth of your aerial shots. Keeping it between f/5.6 and f/11 will be sufficient, though some tinkering might be required based on whether you are shooting close-range nature or medium-range cityscape.
- Plan your photographs
It’s highly recommended that you talk to the pilot before the flight regarding any preference for shots. Knowing what to expect, what’s possible, and what’s impossible helps.
Communication with the pilot is very important especially if photography is one of the main reasons for your tour. Although we don’t recommend making the pilot take another pass or turn, you can sometimes ask for an extended run or a hover if you are stuck setting up your camera settings.
- Clean windows
We keep the glass panes perfectly transparent and clean for photographs. However, temperature changes can indeed make these panes foggy. If possible, you can carry a microfiber towel or wipe-down with you on the flight to quickly take care of any internal fog buildup.
We make sure that you get to have the best possible experience, and that includes catering to your photography needs. We completely understand that capturing these moments is very important so that you can relive them.
